Bubbling just under the top 30 were Add N To X, Jim O'Rourke, Fountains Of Wayne and Mogwai. David Bowie achieved his highest placing since the comeback really got going, with ...hours at #37. A place below him were XTC.
Surprisingly failing to make the grade were albums by Moby (Play), Tindersticks, Groove Armada, Pet Shop Boys and Joe Strummer.
Blur, Supergrass and Suede continued to survive the demise of Britpop, in critical terms at least (though the latter looked vulnerable).
