NOTES:
The disappearance this year of Sounds and Record Mirror adversely affected the sample size, but it's still difficult to envisage any perspective of the year that didn't place Nirvana and Primal Scream at the top. (Neil Young is less explicable.) Despite the lingering presence of old school British indie bands like Carter USM, Wonder Stuff and Kingmaker, there was hope on the horizon in the shape of Blur.
Just missing the cut were Gary Clail/On-U Sound System, Simply Red, Tom Petty and The Orb.
