This was Britpop - the highest placed album from beyond the UK was Foo Fighters' debut at #17. So enthusiastic were critics for anyone British with a guitar that the various artists charity album Help made #31.
Also in the vicinity were Cast, Therapy?, Gene and Spiritualized. Baby Bird and Stereolab might have made more progress if their votes hadn't been split over two albums apiece. Best of all was the ruined splendour of Scott Walker's Tilt at #33. Meanwhile David Bowie's superb 1. Outside only reached #65.
